On 29 June 2026, a 26-year-old Thai flight attendant was arrested by Australian federal authorities and charged in Melbourne with the alleged attempt to smuggle more than 1 kilogram of heroin into Australia. The Australian Federal Police reported that the woman arrived at Melbourne Airport on 25 June on an international flight, where Australian Border Force (ABF) officers X-rayed her luggage and detected anomalies in 12 fabric bags. During the search, they found a white substance which, according to an initial test, was heroin. The street value of the seized heroin is estimated at approximately 500,000 Australian dollars.
Following the discovery of the drugs, the suspect was arrested by the Australian Federal Police and faced two criminal charges: importing and possessing a commercial quantity of drugs at the border, each carrying a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison. The accused appeared in court on 26 June. It was decided that she would remain in custody without bail until the case is brought back before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 14 September 2026.
Simon Butcher, the acting Australian Federal Police Commissioner, stated that the AFP shows no leniency toward individuals who abuse their position or the trust placed in them within an organisation to facilitate criminal offences. Clint Sims, Commander at the Australian Border Force, emphasised how international criminal networks continue to seek to use trusted personnel, including airline staff, to transport drugs into Australia.
Thai Airways International Public Co., Ltd. issued a statement on the incident, stressing its close cooperation with the relevant authorities as well as its strict internal regulations against the possession and smuggling of drugs by its employees. The airline assured that violations of its strict regulations and the laws of the host country are dealt with rigorously and underlined its commitment to transparency and compliance with the law in all destination countries.
