Cash Discovery at the Bavarian Border: A Hefty Windfall in the Trunk

The border police in Bavaria recently made a remarkable cash discovery during a routine check near the Czech border. A driver was stopped and asked to open the trunk, where the officers then found an astonishing 850,000 euros in cash. The 33-year-old driver was unable to provide a plausible explanation for the enormous amount of money and gave contradictory statements about the total sum. The police immediately confiscated the money.

In addition to the surprising discovery, the driver was also caught without a valid driver’s license, which brought him further trouble. He is now officially under investigation on suspicion of money laundering. According to EU regulations, amounts exceeding 10,000 euros must be declared when entering or leaving the EU, which did not happen in this case. If the driver is able to present legal documentation proving the origin of the money, it would be returned to him. However, the criminal proceedings themselves would remain unaffected.

Such a large amount of cash is usually associated with illegal activities, such as drug trafficking or tax evasion. Through their thorough inspection, the authorities in Bavaria may have prevented a significant money-laundering case.
