Entrance Fee for Cologne Cathedral: A Necessary Measure?

Cologne Cathedral, one of Germany’s most famous landmarks, has recently announced that, starting on July 1, 2026, it will introduce an entrance fee of 12 euros for tourists. While admission for religious activities, children under 13, and certain groups of people with disabilities will remain free, this decision raises many questions.

The reason for the fee is the immense cost of maintaining the almost 700-year-old building, which amounts to around 44,000 euros per day. This sum is needed for essential restorations, preserving the world‑famous stained‑glass windows, paying specialized craftsmen, as well as covering electricity, cleaning, and security for the millions of visitors each year.

This announcement has sparked a debate across Germany. Some see the decision as justified, since the revenue will help support the preservation of the cathedral. Others fear that it will make it more difficult for people with low incomes to access religious and cultural landmarks. In other German cities, there is now also discussion about whether similar measures should be introduced for other major churches.

The question remains: How can we preserve our cultural heritage without excluding people from these significant sites?
