Germany is facing an extreme heatwave this week, pushing the country into so-called ‘desert days’. Dominik Jung, a well-known meteorologist, has announced that temperatures will soar and could potentially set a new June heat record. This phenomenon results from an intense heatwave accompanied by a fundamental change in the weather.
– On Monday, temperatures could reach 40 degrees Celsius for the first time!
– Already at the weekend (20–21 June), temperatures in the south and west will rise to 30 to 38 degrees Celsius, with the southwest being the most affected. Only the coastal regions in the north will benefit from cooler sea breezes.
– Monday (22 June) marks the peak of this heatwave, especially in the low mountain ranges in the south. Here, temperatures could reach 32 to 40 degrees Celsius!
– If the 40-degree mark is reached, this would be the hottest June since weather records began in 1881 and would break the previous record of 39.6 degrees Celsius set on 30 June 2019 in Bernburg an der Saale.
In addition to the heat, severe thunderstorms are expected, especially in mountainous regions and in the east. In the afternoons, large cumulus clouds can trigger intense summer thunderstorms, accompanied by strong winds and lightning.
A widespread heatwave is expected to continue until next weekend, with no cooling in sight. Since most Germans do not have air conditioning at home, it is recommended to cover windows with curtains in the morning and drink plenty of water.
Take care of your health, as the combination of extreme heat and thunderstorms can be very stressful!
